ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

Arrival at School

School starts at 8:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Students may arrive after 8:00 am. Students are not supervised prior to 8:00 am. Students can go inside of the building at 8:20 am. In the meantime, they have to remain in the cafeteria, or outside, except in inclement weather. If weather does not permit them to remain outside, they will go to the cafeteria. After 8:20, they are allowed to go to their locker and their first class. Students may not disrupt the academic process by entering class after 8:30 am when the tardy bell has rung.

End of Day

School ends at 3:30 pm.  Students who take the school bus are supervised by staff until they are on the bus.  Parents/guardians can pick up students at the front or side exits at 3:30 pm.  Students in the after school program must go directly to their assigned area and follow their program’s procedures (they cannot  wander the building, go to the store, vendors or the street after school).  Some students may choose to walk or take Muni home. There will be two early release days per month in which students are dismissed at 12:30 pm. A schedule will be sent at the beginning of school and posted on the monthly calendar.

Tardiness to Class

Students who are tardy to class are responsible for making up missed time with the teacher. The teacher may require the student to make that time up after school. It is the student’s responsibility to inform their parents of any after school detention time they have earned

2nd time—Written assignment for one period and call home

Absences

School attendance laws require children to attend school regularly. Attendance is a joint responsibility of parents/guardians and their children. In order to excuse an absence, call the school office at (415) 695-5961 by 8:00 am to inform the school of an illness. Send a written notice with the student when he/she returns stating the reason for the absence which is to be given to the attendance office

STUDENT PROCEDURES

Lockers/Locks

At the beginning of the school year, you will be assigned a locker during first core. You are responsible for bringing your own Master combination lock to keep it locked. You will write down that combination and give it to the Student Advisor. Put it in another spot incase you forget it! Do not share your combination with anyone and do not preset your lock combination to save time. Locker thefts do happen. Please report it if it does. You are expected to keep the inside and outside of your locker clean at all times. If you do not, you may lose locker privileges. The locker is used solely for storage of outerwear and school related materials. The locker is not student property and school officials have the right to open and inspect the locker at any time.

Students may go to their lockers before first period, at the beginning of lunch, and at the end of the day.

Lunch

Students may bring a lunch or purchase a school lunch from the cafeteria or the beanery. Students must remain on campus and behave in an appropriate manner during the lunch period

Free/Reduced Lunch

All families are requested to complete the lunch form, whether your family qualifies or not. Information on free/reduced lunch will be made available in the school office.

Hallway Passes

Students who are out of a class for a specified reason must have a written pass from a teacher. Students who do not have written permission to be out of a class may be given a hallway detention. When a student is late to class, the main office will not give hallway passes.

Hallways

Passing periods (3 minutes between each class) is part of the middle school experience but it is also a responsibility. Appropriate behavior is expected and the halls are constantly supervised.

Phone Calls/Messages

You may use the office phone in an emergency, to notify your parent or guardian of an illness, or to notify them of a schedule change of a school sponsored activity. Teachers can be contacted during the day by leaving your name and number with the secretary or via e-mail. The after school program has their own phone number and students in that program can use after school for calls to parents.

Visitors

Parents/guardians are welcome to visit our school and we encourage you to do so often. School aged children from other schools, in or out of the district, are not allowed to visit school during school hours or attend middle school parties. In support of a safe environment, all visitors are required to report to the office, obtain a name badge, sign in when they enter and sign out when they depart.

Lost and Found

Lost and found is generally located in the Office. Please check for missing items regularly. Unclaimed items are donated to charities periodically throughout the school year. Please put your name on your PE uniform.

Early Release Days

Two Wednesdays of each month will be early release days, for staff development.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm after lunch. The after school programs on these days will run from 12:30-3:30 pm. Students who take the yellow bus will participate in the after school program and get picked up at 3:30 according to the regular bus schedule.  In addition to these dates, we will dismiss one hour earlier during parent/teacher conference weeks in the fall and spring and during standardized testing.  Those dates we be given at the beginning of school.

Dress Code

Our school uniform is mandatory.  For everyone's safety, our uniform does not allow any known gang colors, such as red or blue.  Our dress code is:

• Plain black pants/jeans, skirt or shorts (skirts and shorts must be mid-thigh in length)

• Plain white collared shirt (polo, button-down, turtlenecks)

• Shoes can be black or white or a combination of black and white, and must not have any red or blue on them.
Shoes must be worn at all times.

• When the weather is cold, a simple black or gray sweatshirt, black sweater, or plain black jacket is sufficient.
JLMS sells “Bulldog” sweatshirts that can be worn to school.

• Hats, caps, bandanas and any other head coverings will not be worn in the school building.

• Sunglasses shall not be worn in the classroom or anywhere indoors.

Dress code clothing must conceal undergarments at all times. Tank tops, dance leotards or body suits may be worn, as long as the white shirt is the top layer. See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off-shoulder or low-cut, bare midriff outfits, sleeveless undershirts and swimsuits are prohibited.

All articles of clothing, patches, jewelry, or buttons which have the slogans advertising alcoholic beverages, illegalsubstances, or bearing disrespectful or suggestive messages or symbols are not to be worn at school.

You may not wear the colors red or blue as any part of you school clothes or accessories at school or on your way to and from school. If you do, you will be given other clothing to wear. If you refuse to change your prohibited clothing or accessories you will be considered in defiance of the rules and subject to possible suspension.

Prohibited Items

This includes many, but not all items, that have no place in school: knives, weapons of any kind, cigarettes, drugs, look-alike drugs/alcohol, lighters, matches, fireworks, spray devices, foams, water guns, electronic devices (including cell phones, pagers, lasers, or ipods), hardballs, articles of pornography, gang jewelry/paraphernalia, or other paraphernalia not conducive to a safe, orderly environment. These simple items, plus anything that causes problems of control at school, will be taken from students and the counselor will contact the parent/guardian.

Cell Phone and Electronic Devices

Students are not allowed to bring cell phones/electronic devices.  All such items must kept out of sight.  If they choose to bring these items and they are stolen, the school is not responsible for them and will not look for them. If staff members see cell phones or electronic devices in a student’s hand or in use, they will take them away and give them to the counselor. Counselor will call home and notify the parent.  Parents will be asked to come to school to retrieve the item the second time it is confiscated. Students should wear a watch if they need to know the time.
